Causes of and Cures for Pimples
While most of you might know very well that oily skin leads to lots of pimples, do you know that dehydrated skin can also lead to pimples?
Oily Skin
For those with oily skin, oil glands are over-active, leading to excess sebum being produced, clogging up the pores. The best remedy is to make sure you use skin care products specially suited for oily skin. This would be oil-free products like gels or water-based moisturisers. Also, be sure not to wash your face more than 3 times a day as washing too often strips your face of moisture, causing even more oil to be produced!
To prevent a shiny oil slick on your face, apply a light oil-controlling moisturiser after cleansing. Alternatively use an oil absorbing face powder. If this does not control the oil production, make use of oil blotters to get rid of excess oil. Also use a clay mask once or twice a week to extract oils embedded in pores.
Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin, unlike oily skin, develops pimples because dead skin cells clog up the pores and thus the sebum produced is unable to get to the surface. Dehydration can be caused by various factors such as lack of water, environmental pollution or sleeping in an air-conditioned room.
Exfoliation is a must for dehydrated skin, as it helps to remove the layer of dead skin cells so that the pores can breathe. Take care not to rub too vigorously for fear of damaging your skin. Just massage lightly in circular motions. Exfoliation is not to be done more than twice a week.
A deep hydrating mask 2-3 times a week will help to restore lost moisture to the skin, restoring its youthful glow and encouraging a healthy cell turnover rate. You should also use moisturisers that will hydrate the skin yet leaving it smooth and matt. Gel-typed moisturisers should do fine.
A general rule for all skin types: If your facial cleanser leaves your skin feeling tight and squeaky clean, it's probably too drying for your skin. Experiment with a few types until you can find one that leaves your skin feeling fresh, clean and yet bouncy and hydrated. Many skin-care products come in small sample sizes so you can try them out first before deciding on the best one.
Remember that two people are born the same! A skincare product might work for your friend but your skin might react differently. Never trust the opinion of someone else before you try it out for yourself. You could even get a sample from a friend using a particular product if it does not come in sample sizes.
